IP and licensing

Intellectual Property (IP) is the result of creative thought and intellectual endeavour. STFC recognises its IP as valuable assets and considers the creation of intellectual property to be an important part of its role as a research council.

STFC Innovations Ltd. seeks to ensure that IP created in the course of its activities is developed and exploited to provide a positive economic impact and for the benefit of society, as well as being available to STFC for present and future research activities.

Potentially valuable IP owned by STFC will be protected and exploited in a fair and equitable manner that recognises contributions of individual inventors, their organisations and any other parties.

IP covers a wide range of rights that can be used to define, protect and exploit products of the human mind, human creativity and invention, including;

  • Registered rights:
    patents, registered designs and registered trademarks

  • Unregistered rights:
    copyright, unregistered designs, trade secrets, common law trademarks
